Bangladesh factory blaze kills 21

Posted Fri, 26 Feb

At least 21 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a fire swept through a sweater factory near the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, police said.

The victims, including 14 women, were pulled from the Garib and Garib Sweater Factory in Gazipur, but died of suffocation while receiving treatment in hospitals or on the way there, district Police Chief Mohammad Abdur Rashid said.

He added that the search for more victims at the site, located about 20 miles north of the capital, was called off on Friday morning - around the same time the fire was brought under control.

Labour rights groups claim many of Bangladesh's estimated 4,000 textile factories are unsafe.

The sector employs two million textile workers, mostly women, and earns £6.5 billion from exports, mainly to the United States and Europe.
