On 24 June 2010, the IOSH Yorkshire Branch held their annual branch seminar entitled ‘Don’t undermine health and safety’ at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield.

The event was very well attended by 136 delegates.

The event featured presentations from West Yorkshire Fire Service, EEF Ltd, Caritas Ltd and the National Nuclear Laboratory.

The event consisted of presentations, a demonstration, exhibitions and also allowed delegates the opportunity to have CPD mentoring sessions.

Delegates were also given the opportunity to take part in an underground tour of the mine.

Exhibitors at the event included PROHMS, Peritus Health Management, EEF Ltd and CSS Worksafe.

Positive feedback was received from the delegates, including;

The event sessions were filmed, and the Podcasts will be available to IOSH members on the IOSH Yorkshire Branch Website in the near future.

Yorkshire Branch is seeking more suitable members to volunteer as mentors to help develop new members. Most of the mentoring activity up until now has surrounded helping members to input their CPD, but as more and more members join the Graduate level of membership, Yorkshire Branch is seeking to recruit more mentors to help ease them through the Initial Skills Development phase and complete their portfolio.

It is hoped that the 2 day mentor training to help prepare volunteer members for this crucial role in helping develop the Yorkshire members will take place late January or early to mid February.
