Learn essential website skills and get involved in the group’s website innovation.

Retail and Distribution group needs a volunteer web champion to help manage the content and maintenance of their website. If you are interested in developing website skills, volunteering to help promote Health and Safety to the world through the group website please contact your group chair and let him know your availability to volunteer.

You will have the opportunity to attend group committee meetings and will have training and support to help you learn and develop your skills on the website. The experience will assist you with your CPD reflections.

To help with the role you should ideally have access to Internet Explorer 7.

The Retail and Distribution group's "To Grit or Not To Grit" webinar took place on 24 May 2010 and was very well attended by a broad section of participants interested in the subject.

Last Winter saw atypical levels of snow fall in many parts of the country.  As a consequence there was a debate about whether or not to grit retail car parks.

Zoe Perry, Associate at Bond Pearce LLP was the first to present on the topic, setting the scene from the legal point of view.

Zoe's presentation, Q&A session and her audio podcast (2Mb) are now available to download. This podcast also includes a welcome from Sean Cusack, Chair of the Retail and Distribution Group, and a technical introduction from Annalisa Marzotti, IOSH Networks eCommunications Officer.

Bernard Commons, Group Safety Liability Manager at Wincanton Group Ltd, then put forward his stance from the insurance point of view.

Bernard's presentation, Q&A session and his audio podcast (1Mb) are also now available to download. This podcast includes the closing sections from Sean and Annalisa.

The Publishing Team at IOSH would like to do a photoshoot at a retail or distribution site in March to add to the image bank we have been putting together during the last year. These images are a resource that we call on for use in our various publications, website etc.

We are quite open at the moment to suggestions for the shoot. For example, it could be a warehouse where we can photograph large boxes, containers, forklift trucks, staff etc. Or it could be a shopping centre where we could photograph storerooms at the back of shops as well as shoppers, cafes, shopfronts and so on. However, the types of images we would like (depending on the site) include:
• staff using equipment
• staff interacting with people – either other staff or shoppers
• boxes, containers, general types of merchandise
• packing warehouse, storerooms
• van, lorry, deliveries
• forklift truck
• tills, money being exchanged, receipts, bags
• people of all ages and ethnicities
• crowds of people
• people on escalators
• car parks, cars
• shopping trolleys
• shopping aisles.

A Retail and Distribution Group event called 'Slips and trips in a retail environment' was held on 08 July 2009 in Nottingham.

This well attended event offered the opportunity to gain knowledge of and discuss practical advice on managing slips and trips in a retail environment. The advice and perspectives included science and research, the management of slips and trips related litigation, employee involvement in controlling the risk and flooring specification.

The Retail and Distribution Section of the IOSH South East Branch, invites you to a free seminar on Wednesday 28 October from 9.45am to 12 noon at John Lewis Bluewater.

Topic

Influencing health and safety behaviour in organisations: this interactive session will cover the basic drivers of human behaviour and how they offer opportunities to influence change. Creation of change at different levels will be discussed including through networking, leadership, policy making and change programmes. You will be provided with steps and short cut tips for producing health and safety change within your organisations.

About the speaker

Christopher Howell of Commercial Logic Limited has over 25 years experience of consulting on change within organisations. He has introduced and managed business change within top 100 corporations, central government, SMEs and charities. He also specialises in organisation development and executive coaching.

Who should attend?

Health and safety practitioners working within the retail and distribution sectors; stores, warehouse's and transport managers with health and safety responsibilities; independent transport contractors; FM managers, HSE and EHOs and TU officials.

The SHP IOSH Awards 2008 is taking place on Wednesday 8 October 2008 at the London Hilton, Park Lane. Organised by SHP, in partnership with IOSH, and supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the awards recognise outstanding contributions in the world of health and safety.

The awards focus on six key industry sectors, plus seven activity-related, non-industry-specific categories. We’d particularly like to highlight the Transport and Logistics award to you.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website has a report available called Load security on curtain sided lorries.

Its aims are to establish good practice for securing loads on curtain sided lorries across industry sectors and provide guidance on load restraint to help minimise risks to those working around these vehicles.

Dear Retail and Distribution group members

As you may be aware our group has a sub-group entitled the ‘Warehouse Safety Forum’ (WSF), whose objective is to monitor and promote best practice in the warehousing sector and where appropriate to focus on specific ‘hot topics’ via ‘Task and finish’ (TFG) work groups. The WSF committee recently agreed to a couple of topics namely Dock levellers and pedestrian safety. Each TFG will be working toward gaining an industry wide understanding of the risks associated with each topic and wishes to ensure that our membership is consulted.
 
Therefore, if any members can contribute to either of these groups in the following ways we would be pleased to hear from you:
 
Dock levellers

• Provide example (e.g. case studies) of good practice with regard to the use , specification or design of dock levellers
• Provide examples of risks that have been identified with the use of dock levellers, providing methods utilised to resolve these issues where possible
• Offers of direct assistance in this TFG would be welcome from persons with extensive and relevant experience

Pedestrian safety

• Provide examples of practical pedestrian safety in a warehouse (internal) environment
• Provide examples of engineering controls e.g. barriers etc that have actually delivered safety improvements
• Provide examples of marking walkways, safety signage etc that you feel could be adopted as an industry standard
• Offers of direct assistance in this TFG would be welcome from persons with extensive and relevant experience 

The WSF was originally formed from a wide and diverse group of industry stakeholders and the HSE. It was instrumental in the release of the latest edition of HSG76 and continues to work towards reducing risk in the warehousing sector. Meeting on a six monthly basis, the WSF is volunteer based with self funding members drawn from the original stakeholder groups.
